San Ignacio, Cayo District, Belize + cropped.

I was lucky enought to be there at the start of the big canoe race on La Ruta Maya (the Mayan trade route) all the way to Belize city. It's the second longest canoe race in the world, starting on a Friday and ending on a Monday.

Watching the beginning is the best part, as they jam about 100 canoes in a horizontal line on a river that can only hold about 50. Canoes flip over, break in two or disband all together and everybody and their mother comes out to watch it happen.
